The body of Mississauga resident Amandeep Kaur Dhillion, a young mother, was found at a grocery store near Airport and Derry Roads at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

Police got a call about a possible stabbing and discovered her lifeless body at Airport Foods.

It displayed severe signs of trauma, police say.

Dhillon had worked at the check-out counter of the store for about a year, say area residents.

Neighbouring store owners who learned of the attack rushed over to help. They found the store’s 47-year-old owner — believed to be Dhillon’s father-in-law — lying in a pool of blood in the store’s basement.

He was suffering from chest wounds that are not considered life-threatening and is in hospital under police guard.

Police say they have been able to speak with the man and are now following up on information he has provided. Investigators are also speaking with family and friends of the victim.

No arrests have been made in the case and a weapon has not been recovered.

Dhillon’s young child is currently with relatives in India.

Peel Region just finished its most violent year with 27 people being murdered in 2008.

The murder rate went down elsewhere in the GTA. Toronto recorded 70 homicides in 2008, compared to 84 in 2007. Durham Region had six, and both York and Halton Regions had one each.

Last year another Punjabi Youth Parminder Singh Saini was killed in Propane Blast, in Toronto.

In a written statement, Nokia said the services will only be available to owners of the Nokia N95 smartphone.

The Nokia N95 8GB smartphone, which was launched in Canada in May is the first and only device from the company’s Nseries to be released available in Canada. With Nokia N-Gage, consumers can try and buy mobile games from Nokia and 3rd party publishers or connect with other users through the N-Gage Arena community.

Parminder Singh Saini

It was in a city halfway around the world from their home and nearly a month after a tragedy that the parents of Parminder Singh Saini were at last able to say goodbye to their son.

Family, friends and classmates packed a chapel at Riverside Funeral Home in Etobicoke yesterday for the Sikh service – men on the right, women on the left, each with hair covered – in front of the closed grey casket.

Atop it sat a bouquet of roses and a large photo of Mr. Saini, 25, who was killed in a massive explosion Aug. 10 at Sunrise Propane last month in Toronto, his chosen home.

Only when Mr. Saini’s casket was at last carried through a pair of glass doors, his distraught brother among the pallbearers, did the family’s emotions break, nearly a month after they first heard rumours about their son’s fate.

Mr. Saini came to Canada last December, with a dozen or so friends and classmates from India all enrolled in the same Canadian school. Together, they made up half the enrollment of the one-year Quality Assurance in Manufacturing and Management program at Sheridan Institute.

Mr. Singh worked part-time at Sunrise, and had been officially missing since the explosion. One witness said this week he saw smoke seconds before the blast, and that Mr. Saini, instead of fleeing, ran toward it. It wasn’t until Wednesday that his remains were positively identified, and his family, who struggled to get visas, were able to come to Canada to collect them.

The family made a point of thanking people and agencies who helped, including Sheridan, which proposed an honorary certificate for Mr. Saini, who would have graduated in January.

An investigation into the blast continues. Sunrise has had its licence suspended, but is appealing the order.

The City of Toronto has taken over cleanup of the community and the site itself after Sunrise failed to comply with Ministry of Environment orders to do so.

Sunrise’s owner has declined to speak publicly or give interviews since the blast. His spokesman released a brief statement earlier this week when Mr. Saini’s remains were identified.

The family said yesterday they’d like to speak to officials at Sunrise, which offered this week to do so.

A flurry of diplomatic activity over the last two days saw the US administration, starting from president George Bush, arm-twisting Chinese officials into giving their consent for an NSG waiver for India even though it is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT). As part of this effort, US officials invoked evidence that Washington has of Beijing’s own record of nuclear proliferation, particularly in the context of Pakistan.

In a testimony before the US-China Security Review Commission in 2001, Prof Gary Milhollin of Wisconsin Project on Nuclear Arms Control pointed out that China was “one of the leading proliferators of nuclear weapon technology”. In the early 1980s, China gave Pakistan a tested nuclear weapon design and at least some enriched uranium to fuel it. “This has to be one of the most egregious acts of nuclear proliferation in history,” Milhollin noted.

China also helped Pakistan produce high-enriched uranium with gas centrifuges, and later helped Pakistan build the Chashma 300 MW power reactor and the clandestine Khushab reactor, which produces plutonium for nuclear weapons.

It was also revealed that China’s Seventh Research and Design Institute, which is overseen by the China National Nuclear Corporation, supplied 50 ceramic capacitors to Pakistan’s New Labs plutonium reprocessing plant. The Institute was paid through a bank account maintained by an official at the Pakistani embassy in Beijing, according to contemporaneous accounts.

Similarly, China revived negotiations with Iran on the construction of a nuclear graphite production facility – barely years after it assured the US in 1997 that it would not supply Iran a uranium conversion facility and would undertake no new cooperation with Iran after completion of two existing projects – a zero-power reactor and a zirconium production plant.

Also in 2001, the Central Intelligence Agency submitted evidence to Congress that Chinese firms had provided missile-related items, raw materials, and/or assistance to Pakistan, Iran, North Korea, and Libya during 2000. About the same time, the US imposed sanctions on the China Metallurgical Equipment Corporation (CMEC) for transferring missile parts and technology to Pakistan’s National Development Complex (NDC), which makes the Shaheen-series of solid propellant missiles.

Going further back, the US had caught China exporting poison gas ingredients to Iran; in media reports confirmed that China was sending entire factories for making poison gas to Iran, including special glass-lined vessels for mixing precursor chemicals. The reported shipments also included 400 tons of chemicals useful for making nerve agents.
“China’s conduct in export control has not matched its statements about it,” Milhollin noted in 2001.

For China, therefore, to claim the moral high ground on nuclear non-proliferation concerns only draws unflattering attention to its own pathetic record of nuclear proliferation.

The new web browser, Google Chrome, launched yesterday and while it is initially intended for your PC, expect to see it on Android in the near future. Google co-founder, Sergey Brin revealed a few interesting tidbits about the Chrome/Android connection yesterday during the browser’s launch event.

As both Android and Chrome near their 1.0 releases, it is expected the two will begin to work together, even though they were developed mostly on separate terms. “Probably a subsequent version of Android is going to pick up a lot of the Chrome stack,” said Brin and cited JavaScript improvements as an example.

And “Chrome-like” is an example of what the mobile version of Chrome would be called in order to indicate both its relation to the full blown PC version and its mobile status. The age of complete mobile browsing is upon us!

First: It is fast as you-know-what. It feels super-responsive, so much so that I first thought it must be a trick. The tabs almost seem to click themselves; the autocomplete is so speedy that I thought it was reading my mind. After download and launch, it pulled in not only my bookmarks but, apparently, also my Awesome Bar history. Once I loaded it up and typed “T,” Twitter.com was almost already loaded in the tab. It was slightly terrifying, actually. One note: Chrome did not import my Firefox Live Bookmarks–the RSS feeds that appear in a drop-down from the menu bar, and it sadly doesn’t have this as a feature at all.

The “tabs-on-top” interface is actually a tiny bit off-putting at first. I’m so used to tabs being below the URL bar that I initially felt confused about which ones I had opened. Also, there are no traditional menus for…well, anything. There’s almost no text whatsoever at the top of the browser window. No File, Edit, View, Tools, etc. You’ve got a wrench for the very minimal selection of customization settings and a button to the left of that where you access the menu items you normally find in “File,” “Edit,” and “Tools,” along with a Developer option where you’ll find Chrome’s Windows-style Task manager (and a JavaScript debugger and console, which I think I might really need…see below).

There’s not even a separate search bar; you conduct everything from the URL bar. I did discover that the Ctrl-K keyboard shortcut that normally puts your cursor in the search bar in Firefox adds a little question mark to the Chrome URL bar, so the browser knows for sure that you’re conducting a search. But it’s not really necessary. If you type anything but a URL into the URL bar, Chrome does a search. I like it, but it takes a little getting used to.

Now for the negatives. In my short use, I found that Chrome’s got some problems playing nice with JavaScript–or at least, I’m assuming that’s the problem. A Safari user told me he’s encountered some of the same issues I had, so I suspect it’s related to the open-source WebKit on which both browsers are based (and some quick searching seems to bear that out).

Among the issues I ran into today: I attempted to sign up for Hallmark.com to send an e-card. The site launches its sign-in window as a JavaScript pop-up. Once I’d registered and tried to sign in via the pop-up, the window got caught in an infinite refresh loop. I couldn’t keep my cursor in the text field or type. Sorry, Hallmark! On Facebook, as I attempted to page through an album, I got about eight photos in, and then, as I clicked Next, the page would display the next photo, then immediately jump back to the previous one, and it wouldn’t progress any more than that. Finally, as I attempted to sign in to Hipster Cards (I need to send an e-card today!), that site’s online form failed me at the Captcha field: every time I tried to click in it, the cursor leaped out and plopped itself back in the “First name” field. Firefox to the rescue.

I thought maybe Chrome was trying to tell me something about the e-card sites, but then, as I searched for an answer to the WebKit/JavaScript problem, I got the error on a result page, which said, Warning: Visiting this site may harm your computer.

So, that’s pretty terrifying, and I guess as security features go, it’s hard to miss. Hopefully it’s not a false positive. In any case, like I said, I haven’t done exhaustive testing on Chrome, and I haven’t yet tested it with Google Docs or other Web-based Google apps. But at first blush, I like the speed, but it’s certainly not ready to be my daily browser. At least not if my mom ever hopes to get an anniversary e-card.

The Kingdom of Morocco in North Africa is a nice place for vacation. It has nice beach, pretty cool people, excellent food, and most importantly, goats that climb trees.

Trees goats are mostly found in Morocco. These goats like argan fruit. They like it so much that they are willing to climb the trees to eat them. But because of the overgrazing by goats, argan trees are slowly disappearing. So now they have laws and protection areas setup to protect those trees. Sucks being a goat.
